Imagine Your Problems Shrinking: A Simple Exercise to Shift Your Mindset

Writer: Sandra Thebaud, PhDSandra Thebaud, PhD

Let’s begin with a simple visualization exercise that can help you see your problems in a new light. But before we dive in, let’s talk about why this is important.

You’ve probably heard people ask, “Will you care about this 10 years from now?”

In many situations, it feels like the issue at hand is such a big deal that, yes, you believe it will still matter a decade from now. It feels as though it will shape your life for the long term.

But if we lose perspective on the challenges we face, we risk getting stuck in a cycle of despair and hopelessness. Our minds are deeply influenced by our emotions. Unpleasant emotions can lead to negative thoughts, which in turn fuel even more unpleasant emotions. This becomes a vicious cycle.

So, what can you do if you can’t shake the feeling that your current problems will still matter 10 years from now? Here’s a small exercise to help shift your perspective.

The Exercise

Imagine that you’re 99 years old. Yes, 99. You’re still healthy, still living a fulfilling life. Picture where you are and what you love to do. Visualize what your life could be like.

Now, imagine a 17-year-old approaches you (because at 99, everyone seems like a kid). This 17-year-old starts talking to you about their problems, and their struggles sound eerily familiar to your own.

How does it sound coming from a 17-year-old?

What advice would you give them?

Now, close your eyes and bring your current problems to mind. Visualize them shrinking until they are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

Imagine handing over your problems to that 17-year-old, explaining that this is how big your problem is in relation to the entire span of their life—and yours.

Finally, open your eyes. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that this moment is incredibly small in the grand scheme of your entire life.

Why It Works

This visualization helps you see your challenges from a more expansive perspective. When you view your problems through the lens of a long and fulfilling life, it becomes easier to recognize that many of the struggles you face today may seem much less significant in the future. It’s a powerful tool to break free from the cycle of stress and anxiety, helping you regain a sense of clarity and control.
